Pop The Question: Perfect Placeholder Rings

Nobody of sound mind would argue that popping the question is a tall order. Not only are you meant to be spontaneous and romantic but you’re also under pressure to produce the engagement ring of her dreams – without being given the chance to ask what that dream actually involves. Chuck in a generous dollop of nerves around her response and the enormity of the whole marriage shebang, and it’s enough to make you run for cover and shelve the proposal ideas for a rainy day.

Some blokes get round the whole choosing a ring dilemma by offering her a ‘fun’ little plastic novelty ring as a stop-gap (or placeholder ring, if you want the proper lingo). Some ladies might find this approach fairly cute but unfortunately, others might feel a bit underwhelmed by your efforts.

Happily, Pop The Question, the brainchild of silversmith supremo, Katerina Waller, has come up with a couple of ingenious solutions. Katerina has designed two seriously stylish temporary engagement rings made from sterling silver and diamonds – the ‘Pop Ring’ and the ‘Marry Me Ring’ (pictured). Both are funky, understated, packaged in a handsome presentation box, and are sure to elicit the response you’re hoping for. (Ladies take note – the unisex Marry Me Ring is ideal if you fancy taking the initiative and popping that question yourself…)

They’re ideal if you’re an adventurous type and have decided to propose in a situation where it might be unwise to have a diamond ring in your pocket, e.g. up a mountain, in a boat, backpacking, bungee jumping or in a hot air balloon.

In fact, the rings also make a brilliant present from the groom to the bride, especially if she doesn’t fancy taking her rings along on the honeymoon. The rings cost a very reasonable £45 and £55, respectively, and they’re something that she can wear with pride whilst you shop for ‘proper’ rings at your leisure. If you’re after even more brownie points, a bit of personalisation can go a long way, and Katerina is happy to engrave the ring. There’s also lots of help on the website about how to work out ring sizes.

As Katerina explains, “Choosing an engagement ring is a big and expensive decision – selecting the right size, precious metal, design and gemstone. These rings help to take the terror out of proposing and the girls are delighted because they get to choose their own ring!”
