Better Value Stag-Dos: UK Hotel Prices Fall By 13%
Travel costs, beer money, restaurant bills and hotel charges – stag-dos can be a painfully expensive business, especially when the economy’s biting most of us where it hurts.
Here’s some very welcome news for stag-do planners who’re arranging a stag weekend in good old Blighty. According to the Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI®), hotel prices in the UK fell by 13% last year, falling to their lowest rates for six years.
Having boasted the most expensive rooms in Europe a mere three years ago, Britain now comes thirteenth place in the European league table. On average, we Brits paid £84 for a room last year, down from £97 in 2008.
Only two places bucked the trend: stag-do favourite, Newquay, which saw price hikes of 13%, and Oxford, where prices rose by 14%.
If you’re organising a London stag-do, a room in the capital now averages at £106, whilst Bath remains the Britain’s most expensive city, with a typical overnight stay setting you back a jaw-dropping £111. Prices in Edinburgh were down by 6% at £95 per night, while prices in Cardiff dropped 11% to £81. Helping to dispel the myth that it’s a particularly expensive stag-do destination, Jersey saw a decrease of 17% to a more affordable £93.
For the cheapest night’s sleep around, make your way to the Midlands, where Coventry takes the prize for being Britain’s best value destination. Prices fell by 20% to a bargain £47 per room, per night. It may lack glamour, but will you really care after 15 pints?
