The £5bn Stag-Do
A recent survey conducted by loan providers Lending Stream has revealed that Brits are spending almost five billion pounds a year on stag and hen parties.
In real terms, this is equal to an average £195 per head for stags, more than double the average spend in 2009 and a whopping 25% over the average budget.
For illustrative purposes, see the handy infographic to the right of this page which is not an airport lounge menu, as you may have at first thought.
Each year the average man will fork out £305 on stag-dos, compared to the average £249 per year a woman will spend on hen nights. The lesson here is obvious: men are spending far too much money on getting women drunk.
So where does the money go? According to the survey, for the average stag it breaks down like this;
- £49 on travel
- £58 on booze
- £51 on entertainment and fancy dress
- £37 on accommodation
- £24 on taxis
Which means if you meet the average in each category you’ll actually end up spending a total of £219 on the night.
The research also showed that more than 400,000 stags have spent £3000 or more on just one event, which means Russell Brand’s soirée probably pushed up the national average for the rest of us.
The advent of the recession probably accounts in part for the dramatic difference in the average spend between now and this time two years ago, which proves we have dealt with our national financial quandary in a more sensible way than the Italians, who pour their £5bn a year into seeking financial advice from astrologers.
