Real Grooms: Paul Rutherford

Kilts – check. Castle – check. Pub crawl – check. Yes, Real Groom, Paul Rutherford, has kindly spilled the beans on his Scottish wedding, as captured brilliantly by Archibald Photography.

Your Name: Paul Rutherford

Age: 33

Bride’s name: Susie

Best man and ushers: Graeme Rutherford (best man and my big brother); Scott Anderson, Donny Alexander, Liam Knowles, Matthew Hulley, Carl De Silva, Frankie O’Brien – all ushers (too many close friends and didn’t want any of them to be left out).

Where did you get married? Mavis Hall Park (www.mavisparkhall.co.uk) but stayed at Dalhousie Castle (www.dalhousiecastle.co.uk) the night before the wedding.

Where was your stag do – any scars?

Our stag do was held in a very posh house called the Old Manor House in Oxfordshire. There were a few scars but I’m afraid I can’t divulge the reasons. There were twenty guys all in one house for the weekend – Friday night was spent getting up to mischief, followed by an early start for go-karting, a pub crawl in Oxford, finishing in the pub next door to the house where we all played ‘Aunt Sally’ (knocking a bit of wood off a metal pole with another long piece of wood), then back to the house for a barbecue and more drink etc.

What did the men wear on the day?

We all wore grey spirit kilts with full outfit, but I wanted a more relaxed approach so I told everyone to wear their socks down (not very traditional but the wedding was a humanist wedding so traditional was not high on our agenda – whereas everyone having a laugh and enjoying themselves was).

What three pieces of advice would you give to other blokes going through the whole wedding thing now?

  1. I think the groom should try their very best to chill and relax.
  2. I know it’s what everyone says but try not to worry about the little things as on the day things will take care of themselves.
  3. In my opinion you should delegate jobs beforehand and let your ushers take control. I appointed a boardroom, with a Chairman and CEO and a series of Directors. It added a fun aspect to things and all my ushers carried out their tasks to the key. Childish things work with men (boys)!

A word for the lady, come on, say something emotional about your bride…

My new wife is the best thing that could have ever happened to me; she is definitely my soul mate and I do think we were destined to be together. It sounds cheesy but it’s true – we get on so well and we’re both the most relaxed people in the world which we hope was shown in our chilled, vintage-style wedding where everyone had a great fun. The wedding was a superb reflection of our personalities (we were told this many times by friends and family).

Staggered says:

McBrilliant! Paul’s our kinda groom. We dig the socks down thing and take our hats off to the best man for organising a top notch stag do. Motors, beers and big bits of wood – what more do you need? Our best wishes to Mr and Mrs Rutherford.
