Groom News
It’s wedding news, but with the boring bits left out/fudged over. This week: Cannes stag-do, cans of London Grill, tents with en-suite cans and grooms with a can-do attitude.
Cannes Do
Ever wanted to get drunk at the Cannes film festival and tell George Clooney to keep his political ideals to himself and make more films about vampires and explosions? Of course you have, and now’s your chance, as sponsors Chivas Regal, producers of fine whisky and even finer competitions, are giving you and three mates the chance to have the ultimate movie-lover’s stag getaway.
The lucky winners will be rubbing shoulders with the stars on the red carpet at this prestigious event before partying the night away at an exclusive beach front venue.
To enter, visit the Chivas facebook page.
Man Do
Did we tell you this was the Year of the Groom? The lovely lassies at the Scottish Wedding Directory are putting on a show just for men. Not a demonstration on concealing grey hairs. We want to be clear on that. This is like one of those wedding shows the future bride has been dragging you along to, in all but one very important respect: this is all about you. Grooms, best men, fathers of the bride or groom and ushers: here you’ll find tips on style, grooming, gift buying, stag and honeymoon planning and speech writing. You’ll get fed and watered and best of all, not a chair cover in sight.
THE GROOMS EVENT will be held at The Men’s Store, Glasgow, on Sunday the 3rd of July and you can get tickets for just a tenner each by calling Liz on 0141 445 5545 or emailing Liz@scottishweddingdirectory.co.uk
London Grill

Lambeth council has given the green light for “Camp Royale” which is some tents on Clapham Common that people can stay in, so they can be close to the action of the Royal Wedding. From just £75 you can enjoy three nights in a tent amidst several hundred other snoring patriots sleeping under the stars in a practice that has been dubbed “glamping”.
This is probably based on the higher end of the market which offers en-suite luxury tents, dubbed “peepeeteepees” (by us) furnished with Egyptian cotton sheets and sheepskin rugs, and can set you back as much as £3.5k for the same length of stay.
Of course, this isn’t proper camping. Wills and Harry would know how to do it right; pitched up by a glen, drinking cheap cider cooled by the running water, tickling trout, eating London Grill straight from the tin and rolling up hedgehogs in balls of clay before baking on an open fire. Glamping indeed.
Mixed Grill
Most of us try to get in shape before the big day, but what happens afterwards? Fitness and wellbeing experts Nuffield Health have conducted a survey into post wedding health, and found that the average British newlywed couple is letting themselves go to the tune of 13lbs. 45% of those surveyed cited a lack of motivation as the overriding factor contributing to the decline of their fitness regimen, despite the opposing statistic which reveals that almost 70% of newlyweds would be unhappy to see their partner let themselves go.
Too busy enjoying married life to keep up the exercise? Well if you’d like to keep enjoying it for a good few years, we recommend working up a sweat together regularly.
Saving Stamps
Research by creative software developer Serif has revealed that over a third of UK brides worry about the cost of their wedding (news to us, right fellas?) and that many couples are choosing to design their own stationery to help save them money. The survey showed that 34% made their own using materials from a craft store, 24% bought pre-designed sets from a shop and 12% created them on a computer. The poll also revealed that 47% of couples made the final decision together on the look of their stationery, with 18% of grooms making the decision alone – an area not traditionally thought of as the groom’s domain, but as with everything, the tide is changing.
Serif have developed a DIY tool called CraftArtist Wedding Day to make this process easier and more fun for creative couples more comfortable with their computers than their bank accounts. Knight Rider wedding invitations are no longer just a dream.
Gift Parcel

The age of the internet shopper has seen a massive increase in groom involvement in wedding planning, and the team at zankyou.com are taking notice – the online wedding gift list service provider has found that almost 50% of online wedding gift planning is now run by the groom.
Guys can set up a photo album, manage RSVPs and even add widgets such as a Sky Sports Football News feed to their page to encourage friends to visit more often.
The ability to quickly and easily add gadgets, holiday experiences and quirky household items to online gift lists has led to many men wrestling the mouse off the missus and taking control of the orders.
By contrast, women are more involved in co-ordinating high street store gift lists, often enlist your future mother in law or the chief bridesmaid.
The Year of the Groom: the revolution is here, and it’s happening online.
Meet the team!
Last chance for a while, as the current Staggered Road Trip wraps up this weekend at the Foxhills Hotel, Surrey, with The Foxhills Wedding Show. We sincerely hope you can join us there, where we will give you lots of free things in return for your email address and undying love.
