20 Alternatives To Buttonholes
Hmmm, how to put this – ok, let’s just come straight out with it: most buttonholes are crap.
You know what we mean by buttonholes, right? The stupid flowers that you spend ages stabbing into your lapel so that over the day you can watch them wilt into mulch right in front of your eyes? Dumb. Ok, so not all of them are dumb, but a lot of them are.
So we say: screw buttonholes. We’ve decided to rip them out, stamp on them and replace them with something way cooler. The whole point is that they’re only there to provide a splash of colour and keep you themed with the wedding, there’s absolutely nothing to say that you couldn’t pick one of the following instead…

Some really lovely alternatives. We had pins from Marie Curie Cancer Care – they’re little cloth daffodil heads – in memory of loved ones who had died from cancer, and we also left one on every seat in the ceremony room for each of our guests – it was lovely to turn around during the ceremony and notice that everyone had put theirs on. And really special to have buttonholes that were more meaningful to us.
That’s a great idea. I think the key is that it’s something important to you, that’s what we want people to think about for their own buttonholes, don’t just go for a drab flower because it’s what you’re supposed to do, you can stick anything you want to that lapel…
How about something useful like a cool memory stick attached to a safety pin? I really like the lollipops idea and the marie Curie pins are a really sweet touch too.
I’m faffing with the buttonhole thing – generally I think they are a bit naff and want to do something creative but it’s such a pain when your male guests are expecting the traditional single rose (bleauch)! Why?!?
Stupid isn’t it? The thing that annoys me is that they don’t even work. They wilt and fail during the day until you throw them in the bin. Some of the silk flowers are pretty cool, or ditch the whole thing and opt for pocket squares.
My missus has thought about making flowers out of buttons… Seems weird but the mockups look really good.
The title of this blog made me wonder.. is there truly an alternative for buttonholes? The traditional single flower is a classic, but having a look at those pictures.. that clover button is a really good idea. Silk flowers can be pretty cool, however, they do tend to cost more. To make a buttonhole work you really need a florist who knows what they are doing – make sure the flowers are at their freshest by keeping the stems in water for as long as possible. If the buttonhole is made correctly, they shouldn’t wilt or fail throughout the day unless it’s exceptionally hot!
Well I’ve actually made all my buttonholes personally. Wire, feathers, glue gun, cards and a hole punch shaped like a butterfly have all come together to create something I am immensely satisfied with. A lot of my inspiration came from a lovely wedding supplier who does this sort of thing for a living (http://www.soobird.com/)
I wanted to flex my creative muscles and save a few pennies by doing it myself, and I am very chuffed with the results. However I really recommend that site for some truly amazing designs.
