Stinginess Alert: Wedding Present Spending Falls By A Third

Bernice de Braal Jun 2010 2 Comments Bookmark or Share

There’s no escape from those infernal budget cuts. Even wedding presents are suffering from the economic downturn. According to research from Moneysupermarket Vouchers, newlyweds are experiencing a noticeable and continued decline in generosity as their financially-challenged guests ruthlessly slash wedding present spending by more than a third, the swines.

Frugal guests are now forking out just £28.26 compared to £42.91 in 2008 – a decline of 34%. Happily, it looks like the stinginess is a temporary glitch and spending is now (slowly) rising from the low of £26.71 recorded last year.

Defying the stereotype, Scottish wedding guests appear to be the most generous souls, boasting an average spend of £40.48. Indeed, it’s almost a tenner more than those tight-wad Londoners, who came in second place, spending a so-so £30.78. Guests from Yorkshire held on to their title of Most Tight-Fisted Guests, spending just £23.15 on gifts, up from a frankly shocking £19.08 last year.

Here’s an insider tip – if you’re after decent pressies, invite loads of wrinklies. The over-55s are spending at least £40 on gifts, unlike 18-24 year old whippersnappers who’re parting with a mere £24.

Sian Harrison, voucher expert at Moneysupermarket.com, says: “…there are still ways guests can get the same gifts by spending less. Online vouchers are a great way to get the happy couple something they really want without stretching your finances.”

Righty-ho. Sounds like it’s time to check out the deals on offer at Moneysupermarket Vouchers (from retailers such as Prezzybox, House of Fraser, Red Letter Days, The White Company and iflorist) which should make your wedding present wonga go that bit further.

Wowsers. Stag weekends, wedding attire, hotels, travel, gifts… weddings sure are pricey.

Well, this prompted me to check our database.

The average (GBP) gift value on buy-our-honeymoon.com as paid by guests in 2008 was £43.13, which rose in 2009 to £45.27, and rose again this year to £47.47.

Of course, it could just be that our customer base is entirely Scottish.

I think it’s because your site is so awesome that people want to spend more money. I often go on it just to spend money for people I don’t even know.
