Well, well, well. Just as we’d always suspected – some businesses do indeed indulge in a spot of price hiking as soon ashttp://www.flickr.com/photos/purpleslog/ they hear the W word.

Telephone research by consumer champion, Which? has found that some hotels, florists and hairdressers dramatically increase their costs when a wedding’s involved. Which? found that one hotel’s quote for a sit-down birthday dinner for 100 guests was 25% less than the best deal available for a wedding. Another hotel quoted up to £1,000 less for a menu when it thought it was just catering for a birthday. As for the hairdressers and florists, some of their quotes more than doubled once weddings were mentioned. Naughty. Very naughty.

Martyn Hocking, Editor of Which? says:

“A wedding can inspire many emotions – sometimes joy from those cashing in on your big day. Don’t be afraid to haggle over costs. In one instance, our researcher knocked a photographer down by almost £1,000.”

Forget it being the happiest day of your life – this lot are hell-bent on making it the most expensive. It’s time to fight back, people!

Ah well, at least mulling over proposal ideas, the wedding speeches and stag do ideas is free, eh?

So – how’s the wedding planning going, then? Are you sticking to the budget? Share your tales of eye-watering quotes and wedding rip-offs with the forum.

Weddings are a total racket, there is no doubt.

But service providers can only get the money from us we are prepared to part with. Sure, they do mark up their prices when they hear the word “Wedding”, but that’s because of our collective gullibility.

I had an employee the other day, who already owed me money, ask for a further cash advance of $3,000 for a cash bar. That’s money going right down the proverbial drain, especially for people that don’t have very much money to begin with.

Unfortunately, most of us (me included) needed to learn the hard way the first time around before we smartened up and started paying for value instead of sizzle.
