More Travellers Choose Rail: Stag-Dos By Eurostar

Paying to be trapped in a pressurised tin can whilst hurtling through the air at 35,000 feet alongside complete strangers doesn’t appeal to some folk, strangely. There’s a lot to be said for terra firma.

Perhaps not surprisingly, given the fallout (geddit?) from the famous volcanic ash, a new survey from Eurostar has found that 84% of us would be inclined to choose high speed rail over flying when we next arrange a trip to the continent. Airport parking, flight delays and lengthy queues at security certainly don’t add any extra fun to the average stag-do. A leisurely, scenic meander through the continental countryside and the Eurostar buffet’s drinks menu sounds like a far more relaxing way to kick off the proceedings.

Changing trains is probably asking for trouble on stag weekends, especially when you’re homeward bound, so youhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/austinevan/ might want to stick with direct services. Top of the list for a beer-heavy stag do is, of course, Brussels. Boasting 90 breweries that produce over 400 kinds of beer, it’s not hard to see why it’s one of the more popular stag do ideas with us Brits. Happily, there have been relatively few reports of party-goers finding any real trouble in the Belgian capital.

Closer to home, you can grab a slice of Gallic nightlife in the buzzing northern city of Lille. A weeny 70 minutes from St. Pancras, it’s got a decent selection of bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels. Forget snooty waiters and fun vacuum fashionistas; the northern French have a well-deserved reputation for enjoying themselves. They’re down-to-earth, friendly and big on pastries. So – absolutely nothing at all like the north-south divide in the UK, then.

If superior Mediterranean weather, gastronomy and wines are more your thing (not to mention the myriad of mademoiselles with a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’), you can now train it all the way down to Avignon in Provence. Only 6 hours from London, it’s certainly food for thought.

Planning a stag-do? Are you going by plane, train or automobile? Don’t leave home without our stag-do city guides. Oh, and then there’s the little matter of stag do pranks
