Beer Isn’t Really Bad For You: Official!
Losing sleep over your excess lard? Hoping to cut a dashing figure in your wedding attire? Get down the pub, then.
No, we’re not suggesting that you drown your sorrows. Apparently, beer isn’t very bad for us after all. New research from CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) and the Beer Academy has found that over a third of blokes wrongly assume that beer contains more calories than other alcoholic drinks.
Comparing the calorific content of beer with other tipples, researchers discovered that a half of 3.8% bitter contains a modest 85 calories, whereas a medium glass of 12% red wine has a rather naughty 119 calories and a bottle of 5% ‘alcopop’ packs in a shocking 179 calories. In other words, there’s no harm in enjoying the odd pint of ale as long as it’s part of a calorie-controlled health regime.
According to CAMRA chief executive, Mike Benner: “It is great news to see the myth of the beer belly finally laid to rest…as a low alcohol drink, beer can supplement a healthy lifestyle if consumed in a responsible manner.”
If the prospect of switching to a ‘lighter’ beer depresses you, then take heart from this fascinating fact, courtesy of Mr. Benner: “…two of the last four Champion Beer of Britain winners have been Milds, traditionally weighing in at around 3% ABV, therefore in no way does less alcohol translate into less flavour.”
Being healthy and stuff can be a lonely business, so if you want to get the missus on board, try wowing her with these two killer facts – they’re actually true, which always helps:
- Swapping wine for beer for a single week saves as many calories as a half hour jog
- Beer also contains no fat or cholesterol

This would be great, but last time I went for a drink with my dad I bought a pizza on the way home.
