HI TO ALL THAT ARE TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS POST.

WE STILL HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO GETTING MARRIED AFTER 12 YEARS TOGETHER BUT ARE SERIOUSLY BUYING AND PLANNING NOW. MY ADVICE TO EVERYONE IS TO SHOP SHOP SHOP.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT THERE ARE BARGAINS TO BE HAD EVERYWHERE, EBAY, CHARITY SHOPS, BOOTFAIRS, FORUMS AND FREECYCLE. I BOUGHT MY DRESS LAST SEPTEMBER FOR £100 OF EBAY AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL I CANNOT WAIT TO WEAR IT BUT NOT ONLY DID I GET THE DRESS BUT THE LADY WHO HAD ALREADY GOT MARRIED IN MY DREAM DRESS ALSO HAD WAISTCOATS, RIBBON, BRIDESMAID DRESSES, BUTTON HOLES ECT AND SHE DONE ME A GREAT DEAL ON IT ALL AS IT ONLY TOTALLED OUT AT £200 WITH THE DRESS.

ON FREECYCLE SOMEONE ELSE HAD WEDDING INVITES, AT THE BOOTFAIR MYMUM BOUGHT MY DAUGHTERS FLOWER GIRL DRESSES.

PLEASE BE SURE THAT THERE IS ALWAYS A BARGAIN TO BE HAD AND THEY CAN COME UP IN THE STRANGEST PLACE, YOU JUST NEED TO BE SAVVY ABOUT IT BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU WILL ONLY WEAR THESE CLOTHES ONCE AND WHY BANKRUPT YOURSELF JUST FOR ONE DAY.

ENJOY AND LET ME KNOW YOUR BARGAINS.LaughWink

click on the camera for an alternative link

I think my all-time favourite budget wedding idea is the disposable camera place setting. Not only does it save on expensive and often intrusive professional photography and spare you the ordeal of posing for some prima donna who does nothing but complain about the way you're standing, it also allows for some truly personal and unguarded views of your big day, and makes your guests feel involved.

Bah. It was a picture of a camera. I wish Wordpress would warn you beforehand if a picture won't hotlink.

I agree with Danielle. About everything.

Car boots, charity shops and borrow stuff – no way should a wedding cost £20k it's bordering on crazy, especially if you're going into debt for it. I really worry that as an industry the wedding industry does push that expensive ideal before they acknowledge that you can cut costs left right and centre and still have an amazing day.

My tip: Barter. Nearly every supplier in the business will drop at least 15% off and most will still make a profit at 40% off their ticket price so offer less and be ready to walk away, they'll soon catch you up…

And also: welcome Cool. Nice to have a posting on the forum. Makes the place seem classier somehow. No offence to the rest of the forum goons, you're great too :)

I'm utterly useless at haggling, and I'm not a fan of Omid Djalili. Dear Uncle Staggered, please can we have a little guide to bartering?

Hi Craig

Noone is useless at haggling, i thought i was till i met my fiancee the main point to remember is to feel confident in yourself when you barter if you let yourself feel unconfident people will pick up on that.

When I go to bootfairs i tend to offer them about 50p to a £1 less than what they have asked for as they have already expected someone to offer less. When buying bits off of ebay i will always look at there other items and then ask them if they have anything else that they might not of already listed.

Venue and reception locations they will always have a set price but there is always room for negogiating ie if they have a package deal that is £3000 for 100 people but you wanted to only pay £2500 they would probably be willing to do you a resonable deal.

Hope some of this will help you. Good luck :)

I think the confidence is the main issue, but it's probably got a lot to do with the British desire to avoid confrontation. It's just so much easier to pay the price on the ticket than engage some snooty tailor in a battle of wills. But thanks for your advice!
