Fiancé is considering shunning the traditional gold/platinum ring favour of something "more interesting". He was talking about palladium the other day… anyone bought a wedding band in a non-traditional metal?

palladium is very in at the moment apparently. My OH wants 100% black carbon fibre rings.

I hate wearing a wedding ring (awkward, fiddly, stupid-looking things) but I would urge caution when it comes to changes to the classics for blokes. The thing is that it needs to be immune to fashion changes because, in theory at least, you'll be wearing it for the rest of your life. Then you might want to pass it on to the next generation, will they be as keen on a "different" ring?

I bought my own ring – a 1920s 18ct gold band – for £40 off ebay. An absolute bargain and has that kind of gorgeous burred patina that only comes with older, pre-loved rings.

My advice would be to just get what you like and what your instinct tells you is right. For years I wore silver as it was much more "fashion" than gold but my gut told me I should wear gold, and lo now I've grown up a bit all my silver is tarnishing in a cheap jewellery box and all i wear is gold stuff. Just as well as I love antiquey stuff - and most antiquey jewellery is gold (like my amazing Victorian engagement ring – exit boasting mode)

I've never worn rings at all i dont think they really suit me and i find them uncomfortable. So i was thinking something like brushed titanium. I liked the idea of matching rings but we both wanted something completely different and there was no way i was going to have a row of diamonds in my wedding ring.

Mentioned this in another post, but I went for wide brushed titanium….Id like to think it looks quite manly, and the more it gets bashed around the better it looks – more worn in. It's incredibly strong though…and no flouncy diamonds in sight. Don't wear a ring if you don't want (unless it's going to break the wife's heart)…and men wearing diamonds….on their fingers or in their ears…hmmm…

I have never worn a ring before in my life.  I didn't know what I wanted.  I knew I wanted something silver in color.  We went with 18k white gold.  Be careful about what you chose, my ring is no longer bright white.  Apparently white gold gets a slight yellow tint after some months.

Consider if you work with your hands before you chose titanium.  I heard some have had difficulty at hospital getting ring off in an emergency.  Titanium is a very strong metal.  Cheap and never scratches though…
