Wedding speeches can be a nightmare to write. Expressing your emotions and making people laugh is a tall order. Fortunately, this article will take you through everything you need to come out with a great wedding speech.

I'm joining this forum with a question notr so much of how to write a wedding speech but how to approach the brides father to get him to actually speak and to really try and thing about saying somthing nice, fit for purposes, not swear and most of all not look nervous and ruin his daughters big day! any idea's?

He's a lovely man, salt of the earth type, not a good communicator though. Says very little and when he does speak its like a brain dump that flushes out and all thoughts and makes no really relation form one theme or subject to another.

Anyone suffering from this or dealt with this in the past? I really want him to feel comfortable and be able to do his daughter proud.

Any advice greatfully received. Smile

Maybe you could call a meeting with everybody who is making a speech under the pretence of telling them what you want so that it all runs smoothly and parts of speeches aren't repeated etc. That way he won't feel like you are singling him out, but you use it as an opportunity to make sure he knows what you want.

If he is really nervous you can run practice sessions, maybe even with small audiences, so he can get used to speaking in front of people, whilst at the same time you get to hear the speech in full.

In the worst case scenario, I have been to a wedding where the FoB was not a very good public speaker and was just reading from a speech which had probably been written for him. But it seemed to work, he got a few laughs and said some nice things. So you could write a speech for him, with his input, and let him read it on the day.

It is important to remember that even if he is nervous when doing the speech, it is unlikely to ruin the day. Nobody expects great public speakers for the wedding speech.

I hope this helps.

I went to a wedding where the father of the bride wasn't comfortable making a speech but he was a musician so he wrote a song saying everthing he wanted to. Obviously this only works if the FoB is a musician otherise it'd be awful but it doesn't always have to be a traditional speech.

I have the opposite problem. I told my future father-in-law from the off that his speech is only supposed to last a couple of minutes and is more of a thanks. As far as I know, that's the etiquette??? I have three best men plotting an epic speech so don't want things to drag on anyway!

However, the future FiL keeps talking about how much he is looking forward to giving his speech, there are 9 months to the wedding and I'm led to believe he's already planning it! I constantly remind him it's NOT a speech, but he's always cracking jokes about how he is going to embarrass my fiancee with his stories of when she was little – surely the only cheeky speeches should be by the best men???

I just hope that his speech doesn't embarrass her too much – I don't think it's fair that she cops any of the jokes on her wedding day!

Shouldn't you be posting under a pseudonym Rob?

Personally, I think that without a long, waffly FOTB speech and some tears from the bride then it's not a true wedding.

On reflection Shan, you're right – edited version above lol!

I'm just worried that something the FiL says gets on my fiancee's nerves and she doesn't take kindly to it.  He could just be winding me up I suppose.

I never thought I'd ever be in a situation where I want speeches cut down!

The idea of a group meeting really sounds like a good preventative measure as he will potentially know more people then than just his own family. I do have visions of group therapy with them all, especially with some of my mates sense of humours! so may have to be very selective with the audience in the first instance.

I'm going to research FOB speeches also and all being well he will welcome the advice as I have.

Cheers all.

it's not so bad, just be confident. And also, make sure people are sufficiently tipsy before you start
