Fish eggs, goose liver pate, oysters…champagne is just sparkling wine, but we'll pay through the nose for it.

Is this what people want at a wedding dinner? Are we paying for taste, or status?

It's a rich philosophical area you open up. I hate myself for loving it but fois gras is the best food on earth. The fact that it couldn't be crueller if it involved punching a kitten to death is a moot point. If you don't want to get eaten by those bigger than you, don't evolve so that your innards taste delicious.

Tiger penis soup, that's another one. People are always complaining about the levels of pig member in the average sausage, but swipe the stripey johnson from an endangered species and suddenly it's a delicacy.

This extends beyond food, of course. One word: ambergris.
