Youtubery: Five Songs About Weddings

David Arrowsmith Oct 2009 One Comment Bookmark or Share

The subject of weddings is one that is much-considered in song and it seems everyone from Chaz and Dave to Madness have had a bash at a wedding song. Here we have picked five songs on weddings for you to listen to, enjoy, and learn from – but perhaps not play at your ceremony or reception…

Dishonourable Mentions

To Outkast and Kelis for the amazing lyrics on ‘Dracula’s Wedding’ (Don’t run, I’m not the sun, so much at stake… oh! Bad choice of words!), Gram Parsons for what was back then an expensive ‘$1000 Wedding’ and Panic at the Disco for ‘Time to Dance’ (When I say “Shotgun”, you say “Wedding”). But, as with Highlander, for some nebulous reason there can be only five.

5. Isis – Bob Dylan

This Bob Dylan classic is a warning to all those about to marry a woman named after an Ancient Egyptian goddess. She may be complex, damaged and perhaps not the safest bet for an easy life. And do not, at any cost, go digging up pyramids with strangers who have a secret death wish. Simple tips, for a simpler life.

4. Crashed the Wedding – Busted

Before Charlie from Fightstar was himself, he was apparently in some band called Busted. Perhaps don’t invite them to play at your wedding. They dress up as girls and make a frightful mess.

3.Shotgun Wedding – Roy C

‘Cos your father got the gun, and there ain’t no place to run’, I think I speak for all of us when I say we know how he feels. Great bullet sound effects too and you’ve just got to love that ‘olde time’ sound. Sir Rodward of Stewart later covered this, but we salute the original and best. Fire up the gramophone and let it spin…

2. November Rain – Guns n Roses

Guns n Roses’ orchestral masterpiece (not a phrase one hears all that often admittedly) was also one of the most expensive music videos ever made. In it Axl marries real life girlfriend Stephanie Seymour, only for her to die. Not sure what the lesson here is, don’t get married in the rain? Or just don’t ever marry Axl Rose? Ahh, yes, there it is…

1. White Wedding – Billy Idol

But before Axl and Steph did it, our very own rock legend Billy Idol and his real-life lover Perri Lister had already featured in a music video wedding all of their own. It’s a classic track – and also bizarrely popular at actual real weddings. Some people just don’t pay any attention to lyrics, do they? Perhaps they never saw the video either. I do like his snood though…

More observant people will notice that this is the Literal Video version of White Wedding, we thought we’d throw you a curveball (i.e. Youtube have banned the original).
