Venue Idea: The Hilton Liverpool
In all the chatter about how much you love each other, and getting the family together, it’s easy to lose sight of why you’re really getting married: to show everyone what fabulous taste you have in everything from wives to note cards.
These were the thoughts of Staggered as we checked out the wedding facilities at the brand-new Liverpool Hilton hotel. We’re pretty much the most cynical men’s wedding website there is (and not just because we’re the only men’s wedding website there is), and even we thought there was a buzz about the place.
It’s called a “landmark hotel”, which pretty much sums it up. A big, white, curved structure with views of the Albert Docks, it’s an imposing building. Inside, a huge glass staircase takes you to a reception room that would be perfect for welcome drinks, and leads through to a swanky dining area – one of 13 function rooms, including three ballrooms. The place is massive, brand-new, and more or less guaranteed to wow your guests.
The modern wedding guest, of course, has seen too many episodes of Come Dine With Me to let a nice glass of champagne and posh chairs turn his or her head. That’s why you have to think through the food, flowers and music to match your high-end venue. Luckily, the Hilton offers a wedding planner service to talk everything through with you and make sure your day is exactly how you want it, and that everything runs smoothly. And the food in particular is worthy of note – with an emphasis on locally sourced produce, the chefs there have cooked up some great menus – everything from scallops to Pennine wood pigeon is available.
Of course, once you’re done with the hard work of the actual wedding, you’ll probably be in need of a nice kip. There are 215 rooms in the hotel, but we recommend booking a bunch of those out for your guests and bagging the Presidential Suite. It is your wedding day, and the gigantic bed, posh bathroom and views across the city’s landmarks are suitably grand.
For those looking for something quiet and traditional, the proximity to Liverpool One – the city’s new “shopping and leisure centre” (you know the kind of thing) – could be a problem. But the shiny new facilities and mega-keen staff at the Hilton make it a great city-centre option.
