Topping The Cake
It’s been rather crazy round here with all the wedding stuff going on! First of all, the invitations are on the way to be given out (though after reading Helen’s blog, I’m not sure I’m looking forward to it as much as I was before!) and secondly, we have the cake topper!
Back in the day, when I was going through my frantically-browsing-wedding-websites phase, I saw a collage of photos from a ‘real wedding’ feature that pretty much summed up what I wanted at our wedding. There was a Megatron ice sculpture. The groom and his men had Transformers’ cufflinks and arrived in a big yellow bus. The bride and groom smeared cake round each other’s faces. I’m not into Transformers but I loved that wedding because it looked like they made it really personal and had tons of fun doing so. The main thing that grabbed my attention though, was the cake topper; there was a bride, and she had the groom on a leash. On all fours.
When I showed Paul the picture, he thought it was hilarious. We both have a similar sense of humour and ‘she’s the boss’ jokes have been flying around between our friends ever since we started dating. He moans about it, but he loves it really. Most of the time. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find the same cake topper anywhere and similar ones that I did find were fugly.
In the end, I turned to homemade treasure trove, and occasional cringefest, that is Etsy. One of the merits of the site is the Alchemy feature, which lets you put in a request for what you want and handsy people bid on the so-called contract.
I went with MagDee in the end (I would say ‘we’ but Paul wasn’t really interested in the finer details of negotiating the details) and I couldn’t be more impressed with her as a vendor. I sent photos and descriptions of my dress and Paul’s suit, and in return she sent me progress photos and notified me of postage. The whole thing took barely any time at all. And… here is the finished result! Custom-made to our specifications:
So if you’ve decided on a cake topper that reflects you as a couple (perhaps you met when scuba diving, or chugging a yard of ale), then I would heartily recommend MagDee. You would be supporting a small business and she is only across the canal in Ireland (and to some of you, right on your home turf).

That’s bloody brilliant – do you mind me asking how much it was?
Love it. It somehow manages to be traditional AND contemporary. I don’t know why but I particularly like the blank faces, I think sometimes the faces on these things are too ‘cutesy’.

Andrew – it was about £60 including delivery. A little pricey but it was custom-made, I sent over pics of the dress and described Mr Alena’s tux and everything.
Debs – I agree! I was a bit disappointed when I realised they wouldn’t have faces at first but I think it’s far more “grown-up” that way if that makes sense. Some of the toppers with faces just end up looking like toys.
Oh, and make sure you check out the other cake toppers in the seller’s shop! She does “classic” ones too, but you can request anything you want really.
Fab-absolutely love it!
