The Half-Life Of The Party

Pete Boyland Jun 2010 11 Comments Bookmark or Share
So, following my recent musings on good and bad stag do’s, I’ve been doing a bit of a straw poll of my potential stags to try and decide on the best venue for my do at the start of next year.
A couple of pointers about what I’m after – yes, it will be a long weekend abroad, but nowhere cheesy or predictable. As a bit of a self-professed traveller, I consider even Prague or Budapest a bit passe, so the thought of going somewhere like Amsterdam fills me with fear and loathing.

Best avoid the local home-brew...

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those idiots who thinks it would be a great laugh to go play soldiers in Kabul, or would get a kick out of going on the lash in Mogadishu. I just want to go somewhere new where there is a bit of history and maybe something to do other than get drunk. However, once you decide to go off the beaten-and-vomit-stained track, you’re presented with a whole new set of challenges.
So, after a bit of discussion with the troops, I’ve narrowed it down to two strong contenders: Berlin or Kiev.
Berlin is obviously the safer, far more sensible option. It’s not likely to be cheap, but apparently the nightlife is truly exceptional. I’ve also got a couple of local guides who should be very helpful in keeping costs down, and finding the best club with a Metallica covers band. This is the mature option, and will probably be more relaxing and lead to better drinking opportunities.
Kiev, on the other hand, is in a country reeling from the double whammy of the post-Soviet blues and a deep recession. Westerners are still likely regarded as cash cows to be milked, and you probably really don’t want to get in any trouble with the authorities. It will also involve a trip to Chernobyl. Apparently it’s fairly safe these days, and all above board if you go with an organised tour - all here on TripAdvisor.
However a couple of my stags have already balked at the idea, partly because of the hefty price tag (a day trip can set you back well over £100). While they clearly don’t have to do that bit of the trip, I worry I am being selfish by wanting to go somewhere so far away (both geographically, culturally and in terms of half-life). But then it is My Stag Do, it’s my party, and I’ll go to the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster if I want to.
So, the question is, to what extent should I consider my stag’s opinion when deciding where to go? Any opinions, advice or inevitable mockery would be very welcome…!

I guess the call is whether you’d rather have your mates there and do something cheap and cheerful, or have the weekend trip you want with fewer mates. It’s a tough call and ultimately yours to make. To be fair I think if you’re giving them opt-in/opt-out bits as well then it’s reasonable to do what you want.

I’d pick Kiev, but only cos I can speak Ukrainian. My German extends to ‘The Cathedral, please?’ which means it takes *ages* to navigate around using a single type of landmark.

Yeah, everyone keeps saying Berlin will be “Safer”, “Closer”, “Nicer” “Cheaper”.

We might as well get a cottage on the Isle of Wight and spend the weekend drinking nice cups of tea ;o)
