The First Rule Of Cake School…

…is you don’t talk about cake school. Although, today, we will. Not me, as I’m not to be trusted making anything more complicated than spag bol, but Mrs Pete-To-Be. Here’s her report of her day out in London learning to make wedding cupcakes.
Cupcakes

I made this!

- Thank you Pete. Now, most of you will probably have given some thought to your wedding cake. I certainly have, and not least because I quite like cake!

We’re going for a stack of cupcakes, with a smallish square cake on the top, so we’ve got something to cut. There’s a bit of a fashion for cupcake wedding cakes at the moment, and I’m not a massive fan of stodgy fruit cake anyway.

Plus it’s likely to be cheaper – particularly for me, as we have a couple of friends who are really rather good at this kind of thing, and have already offered to make the whole thing.

So, my Maid of Honour (MoH) and I booked ourselves onto a day course with cakes4fun, it was all day (10am-4pm), and cost £100. My MoH had been on one before, and assured me it was worth every penny. D with cakes
The course involved a lovely tutor called Elyse, who was very patient and fun, and eight of us learning. I think they assumed we could all make the cake bit, so the focus was on the decoration – piping icing, and making decorative butterflies and flowers, etc out of sugar paste. We all made quite a mess, got to eat a few cakes and even got to decorate 12 each to take home. Everyone agreed they looked pretty professional, and they didn’t last long when I took them into work.
Apparently they even had a groom-to-be come along a few weeks ago. His intended had told him to sort out the cake, and he maybe took this a little too literally… hopefully it will turn out to be a nice surprise and not a complete disaster!
While they do courses for tiered cakes too, a lot of icing etc. has to be prepared and decorated the day before or even on the day, so this is probably not ideal for a bride or anyone else likely to be busy elsewhere, but if you have friends who are up for it it certainly brings a personal touch. It could even be a cunning way to distract the future mother-in-law…
It sounds pricey, but all the equipment is provided on the day, it felt like I learnt a lot, and I’m certainly planning on going back for another one. You could even get the girls together for a hen (or stag?) day - there was lots of wedding talk, a mixed friendly bunch who were far from the mumsy stereotype, and and let’s face it not many girls don’t like cake!
