Sh1 (2)If you’re looking for a suit with a bit of a difference, one option is to take a look at the sherwani, also known as the Indo-Western coat.

These knee-length jackets which culminate in Nehru collars are an amalgamation of Eastern and Western fashions and as they come in hundreds of different patterns and styles they can be tailored to suit your requirements.

Although the Sherwani is known as the Indian dress for kings, the coat has British roots, as it blends the traditional Indian men’s outfit, the Kurta Pyjama and the British frock coat.

During the period of British Raj in India, long jackets were symbolic of higher status, wealth and luxury and sported by the Who’s Who of Indian society. Over time these frock coats were adapted to take in Indian tastes and the sherwani was born.

Because of the joint heritage of the sherwani they are a great way of adding something slightly different to the traditional English suit options and they work well with normal trousers and waistcoats.

Although the formal hire sector is only slowly catching onto the demand for sherwani rental there are several places where you can purchase your own. Amara (based in Wembley, North West London) are highly sought-after for their original take on sherwanis and, as such, appointments are recommended particularly on the weekends.

You can select from the ready-made range (which can be modified to suit your tastes and preferences) or as most grooms prefer they can assist you in creating a bespoke designer suit in your choice of fabric, style, colour and should you wish, embroidery. Prices for a made-to-measure suit including coordinated accessories, range from £550 – £950 and rental options are also available.
