See How They Run

So, how to prepare for, and enhance a day at the races? Naturally, you’re going to want to watch films, listen to music and play games. Here’s some of the horsiest.

First up is horse racing’s answer to Rocky, Seabiscuit (£3.99, Play.com) notable as much for its intriguingly awful visual effects and Tobey Maguire’s ginger wig as for its emotional kick.

Ideally, hunt down the Marx Bros’ helpfully titled A Day At The Races and chomp on a big comedy cigar. You can find the DVD collection that contains this film on Play.com but it is currently unavailable to buy new. Grrr.

To make up for the lack of Marxism on show, why not enhance your audio experience with namesake Queen album A Day At The Races (£11.99, Play.com) which has little to do with horse racing, granted, but is rather brilliant.

For a more interactive experience, try your hand at G1 Jockey for Nintendo Wii (£14.99, Play.com) and make it clear to all participants that there will be a minimum bet before they are allowed to play.

Finally, witness the classic ‘jockeys in the wild’ sketch that launched countless copycats and as a sort of bonus, the rest of the excellent and underrated Big Train (£7.99 Play.com)

Been There, Done That: Our Man On The Track

This week our man in the field is, in fact, a woman. We asked the lovely Kelly Barnes of the British Horseracing Authority to give us some insider info on exactly what you can expect if you take your stag party to the ponies. This is what she told us;

It’s not all Top Hats and Tails – with 60 racecourses around Britain there’s something to suit every stag. You can sip champagne on the lawns at Ascot, hire a famous open top bus at the most historic and iconic race in the world – The Derby, party til you drop in Liverpool after a day at Aintree’s Grand National, and check out the tweed and the Guinness at Cheltenham, where 220,000 pints are consumed during the four day festival!

If you’re looking for the ultimate lad’s day out then head for one of the Gentlemen’s Days where you can experience complimentary treatments at the Grooming Stable and between races you can try your luck at the fun casino or prove your style credentials in our Best Dressed Male competition, and there’s usually live music to round off the day.

If your stags like adrenalin-fuelled action, then racing music nights are the hottest ticket for a summer stag. With flat racing action and a pulsating open air live concert in some spectacular settings with international bands like The Feeling, Razorlight and James Morrison, this has to be a top choice for a top day and night out.

Special collaborations take place at many of Britain’s racecourses including London’s famous cocktail bar Mahiki,at Newbury, Comedy nights at Sandown Park, where stand-up performers from London’s famous Comedy Store are on hand to entertain, and with World Cup action being shown this summer, stags will get the best of both worlds.

A stag party at the races offers an amazing value day and night out with racing action and loads of additional entertainment all in one venue. There are special areas available for groups to reserve – from private boxes to panoramic restaurants and pavilions. With racecourses now offering party packages and fantastic group offers from only £12, the Sport of Kings has never been more affordable!
