Stag-Do Alert: Bank Holiday Traffic Gridlock Predicted
A surprising number of people seem to be ever so slightly sadistic and have arranged their stag weekends for the August Bank Holiday (that’s next weekend, people). If that includes you, be warned that the usual traffic chaos is predicted, particularly around airports, popular holiday routes to the coast and also Leeds and Reading due to both music festivals.
The AA predicts that 16 million of us will hit the roads for a long, sunny weekend (well, we can dream) and you don’t want to waste precious beer time stagnating in traffic jams.
Friday is expected to be the worst day; a survey by car insurers, Esure, has found that a whopping 41% of 18-25 year olds have already planned a day trip by car over the weekend. Esure reckons that the average motorist will be delayed by 84 minutes and an unlucky 12% may endure jams of over three hours, so if you’re heading to the airport, do give yourself extra time to get there. Don’t think you can escape the crowds by heading off early, either – the poll found that 30% of drivers planning trips intended to set off first thing on Saturday.
According to Esure’s Mike Pickard, “Travel delays are standard fare for any bank holiday weekend but this week we’re facing a perfect storm for delays on the road. Millions will opt for the car and a large percentage will not prepare properly.”
Here’s how you can prepare for the chaos:
- Avoiding peak time travel;
- Stock up on essentials including water, food and a fully-charged mobile (no, not beer);
- Carry out basic checks before leaving e.g. the cooling system and cooling fan.
Sounds like the train is the way to go, if at all possible…
