Proposing On MSN
Outside, Russian winter raged on. It was -30 degrees Celsius, which meant that my hands would go completely numb in the five minutes it took me to sneak out of my strictly anti-smoking grandmother’s flat and smoke a cigarette (which made locating the keys difficult sometimes). It also meant that all there was to do was stay in, refresh Facebook and drink, and so I was staring into the computer screen, hideously drunk.
On the other end of the MSN window was my boyfriend of two years, Paul. It was Friday night and he had just got in from the pub. Therefore he was also drunk. He was telling me gossip about people back at home, I was telling him about how my holiday was turning out to be a dud and then we got talking about all the mushy stuff and how we miss each other, as we normally do when we’re drunk (we both have this chronic illness where we’re unable to talk about our feelings unless our livers are begging for mercy).
Somewhere along that conversation, we decided to get married.
At this moment, especially if you’re a girl, you’re probably going, “what?! That’s the least romantic thing ever!” but to be honest, it was in line with the rest of our relationship. It just so happens that we were both legless at key moments of our relationship; when we first got together with the full intention of only having a one-night stand and going our separate ways afterwards, when our friends finally got us to admit that we liked each other and become boyfriend and girlfriend, when he got me a promise ring. And to be honest, the idea of being taken to Paris and being proposed to on top of the Eiffel Tower sounds cheesy to me. I wouldn’t say no if it happened, obviously, but it’s not something I have always dreamed of.
And so, after two years of sex, pizza and arguing, I was getting ready to tie the knot. I’ve never thought of my wedding before that but this was super exciting. There were venues to be picked, dresses to be looked at and girlfriends to obsess over the big day with. We postponed the wedding initially because neither of us were working but recently, Paul got a job and it was so ON.
Guess what state I’m going to be in on the wedding day…
