Pranks: The Spectrum of Nastiness
For his first column on the stag do prank, we asked Anon Bestman – perpetrator of one of the world’s best stag pranks according to the Huffington Post – to give his view on how far is too far when it comes to pranks…
Let me start by admitting that when I set up my mate by making his bed post to Twitter every time he got on the job, I never, ever imagined it would go as far as it did. For days after it got reported by different websites I was crapping myself that it would go wrong, someone would find out who he was and it would be game over. I genuinely felt terrible that if people found out who he was then it could ruin his life.
The key point there though is the “if”. I did everything I could to make sure no one would ever find out about who he was – therefore we were all sharing a joke at his expense but no one knew who he was – so it was pretty much a victimless crime.
Now I’m not saying that I’m the best pranker in the world, that’s a load of bollocks. I copied the idea off Instructables and was just lucky that it worked well. That said I think what I did judge pretty well was just how evil to be, it was funny without ever wanting to ruin his life or hurt him. And that’s the point – if you’re pranking your groom (or anyone) your aim should be that they can laugh about it as well, eventually.
The rule from Staggered is apparently “no physical or mental scars” and I think that sums it up well. You want to have a laugh without scars – and all that requires is a bit of thought about what prank would work well on your guy – it’s always best if it’s original, creative and plays to the individual’s personality – it’s a lot like a con really.
Here’s another guy who I think got it just right:
Ok, so it’s a simple prank but it’s exactly the level that a prank should get you at – it’s a bit of fun and then life returns to normal. My feeling is that the majority of stag-do pranks are not ambitious enough, people moan about them (especially people in the media) but a good prank can be a thing of real happiness, so pitch it right, do your thinking and aim high.
