Make Your Own Wedding Rings

Here at Staggered, we are close followers of the world’s markets. For, as a butterfly flaps its wings in OPEC country, so the cost of a wedding in the UK can change dramatically. Take the price of gold. As the world’s rich people took their money out of unstable stocks and shares and put it into nice, solid, dependable, tasty gold, the price has gone through the roof during the recession – up 20% this year to hit a record price of more than $1,100 an ounce.

howwedoit1bigAs you take in what that means for the price of your wedding rings, you may start to wonder whether you can fashion them from tin foil without your wife-to-be noticing (in fact, someone on the forum was wondering about alternative metals for rings just yesterday).

To that idea, Staggered says, pish! For there is a third way – you can make your rings yourselves at the Wedding Ring Workshop. The rings you craft there are much less expensive than you’d pay in the average jeweller, and more importantly it has appeal for brides as it’s more romantic and personal than buying mass-produced rings.

A morning at the workshop in Hatton Garden (London’s jewellery quarter) will begin with a chat with a designer about your ideas, followed by a demonstration of the ring-making process. Then experts will help you to melt down your gold, mill and shape the rings according to your requirements. Never again will that rhombus-shaped ring finger trouble you! When the metal has cooled you can tart it up a bit – filing, buffing and polishing them to a professional standard. The rings can even be engraved.

Essentially, it’s a win-win for any cost-conscious couple. Personal, unusual, inexpensive, and arming you with Lord of the Rings jokes for the rest of your life.  We’ll send a free ingot to the first couple who supply a wedding video where the groom picks up a ring and says “My precioussssssssssss”.

The Wedding Ring Workshop experience costs £990 for a day including two gold rings, lunch and champagne. (More for white gold or platinum.) See their website for more details.
