Its all about the shoes
Let’s face it, most men don’t give too much thought to our footwear. A comfy pair of trainers, a decent pair of work shoes, something a bit swankier to go out on the town in (aka ‘pulling shoes’ or ‘dancing shoes’ depending on your current relationship status!), and some socks and frankly most men are sorted for foot based clothing. However all that is another of the things that goes by the wayside when you are getting married.
Its only when you get engaged that most men begin to understand the bewildering selection of footwear around. Brogue? Isn’t that how Irish people talk? Isn’t a Derby something horses do? And aren’t loafers something to do with the shower? Oh wait, that last one is loofah, isn’t it. At the end of the day what they are called doesn’t matter too much really. What they look like becomes more important.
Obviously the rest of your wedding outfit will greatly influence what shoe you decide to wear on the big day. If you are going full on formal with a tail coat and cravat, something in patent leather might well work the best. However if it’s a more relaxed lounge suit you are wearing, with or without waistcoat, then you might want to find a more relaxed style of shoe to go with it.
Colour is always a bit of a complex issue as far as shoes are concerned. Personally I wouldn’t go for brown shoes with a navy suit, though you could get away with tan shoes. If you’re going with a navy suit it would be clever to put on a pair of navy trousers to go shoe shopping in, to check if the colour works or not. However it may be better to allow discretion to be the better part of valour and pick a black pair. With grey or black suits always go black. Unless of course you have a theme/style to your wedding that allows something more individual, such as blue suede.
Shoes are something it’s worth thinking ahead a bit for, as they will need wearing in. You don’t want to get to just before the first dance and have aching, or worse blistered, feet. It’s also worth reading Staggered’s guide on how to look after your new shoes. Men may not always be the best at looking after shoes, but these ones will need to look fresh out of the box new on the day, whilst also feeling worn in and cosy.
So anyway, off to the sales Kirsty and I went, looking at shoes. Sales are actually a pretty good place to look for shoes. A fresh pair of black Kurt Geigers price were bought at half price. Unfortuately Kirsty had already bought her wedding shoes, otherwise a pair of blue satins with a 3 inch heel would have also been purchased. Still one bargain is pretty good.
