How Your Wedding Suit Can Make You Look Slim
January is regarded by many as the most depressing month of the year. Not the most upbeat way to start this blog but a point that needs to be made. Whether it’s the long wait till pay day, the post-Christmas lull, or the weather, everyone has their own reason. But no matter how well, or not so well, your start to 2010 is going, be thankful you’re not a woman.
Everyone puts on weight over Christmas but while we men can settle down and enjoy our bit of winter insulation, women are being bombarded with advertisements for keep fit videos, weight loss tablets, expensive gym membership and even music to listen to while in said gym.
Now, if any of these women happen to have a wedding at the beginning of the year this can be a disaster. Sure, they can have their dress altered if they ate too much Christmas cake or maybe invest in some of those pants that hold bits in that choose to hang out instead. But, that’s not the issue here, as any of these attempts at perceived weight loss will still probably leave the bride feeling unattractive, especially if there is an obvious difference between what they look like now and when they tried on the dress.
Fortunately for men we have two things going for us. One, is that we usually choose our suit after the bride has chosen her dress, meaning if we have gained a few pounds we don’t have to have anything altered. Two, compared to a wedding dress there are many tricks a skilled tailor can use to make you look pounds lighter without setting foot near a gym.
If you’re getting married soon and worried about weight, here are my top five tips for a weight loss suit:
1. Stand normally
Men, when you’re being measured for a suit, most of you will we have a tendency to stand with stomach sucked in and chest puffed out. If this is how you normally stand then fine and congratulations for looking the epitome of masculinity!! However, if this is how your suit is made or bought to fit, it will look all wrong on the big day. So make sure you’re honest with yourself and your tailor.
2. Opt for a one or two buttoned jacket.
If you are short, ask for slanted external pockets. These two points will help to elongate your body and make you look thinner and taller than if you were to choose a Double Breasted or three buttoned jacket.
3. Wear your trousers long.
They should almost touch the ground if you are wearing flat shoes but, if you have a heel they should be on the heel at the back and just ‘break’ slightly on the front. If they are too short they could make you look stubby. This rule applies to trousers in general but, is more important if you’re endeavouring to look slim.
4. Check if your tailor includes alterations
Some tailors will include any last minute changes as part of the deal. If they do, you’re in luck and the Christmas binge will be skilfully disguised.
5. Last but, certainly not least, buy one that fits you perfectly in the first place!
If you can afford a handmade bespoke suit then go for it. I’ve never tried to disguise the fact that I find hired suits to be one of the worst inventions of the last century – you’re hardly likely to get a perfect fit, from a suit which is designed to fit half of the male model population! If the suit doesn’t fit in the first place, it can make the trimmest of men look chubbier and could even affect your posture and how you walk! When going to a hire-shop you will be measured around your neck, chest and legs – a tailor designing your made to measure or bespoke suit will take in to account many different measurements and more importantly all the figuration factors that make your body unique.
At Hemingway we will always be pleased to accommodate any last minute minor alterations within our price but, hopefully you have been organised and had the suit delivered after you have lost those few extra unwanted pounds!
