Get Married At Monkey World
If you feel like you’ve looked around every church and hotel in Britain, and could write a dissertation on marquees, there may be a venue solution for you waiting at Monkey World in Dorset (We’re not sure but we bet the jingle goes: “Monkeys! They’re everywhere! Look! There’s another Monkey! MONKEYS! Not open Bank Holidays.”). The sanctuary, which is home to some 235 chimpanzees, orang utans, capuchins and woolly monkeys, has just been granted a wedding licence and will host its first hitching in September 2009.
Ceremonies will take place alongside the Paddy’s Enclosure, home to 20 chimps. Monkeys and guests will be kept separate, but as you will all have the chance to explore the park’s 65 acres, if any of your relatives are a bit on the hairy side, it’s a good idea to do a head count before you leave.
In other monkey/wedding news you might like to know that two monkeys have gone through an entire Hindu wedding ceremony in India. The monkeys, pets of two different families that were kept chained up (insert your own gag here), were released into the wild on their happy day, but not before they had been dressed in traditional clothing, showered with gifts, and taken through the complete human marriage ritual by a local priest.
Keep your eyes peeled for more monkey wedding updates.
Brownie points
- There are lots of unusual wedding venues available around the UK; if you’re looking for something a bit different, try suggesting the Natural History Museum in London, one of the city’s most beautiful and interesting buildings.
- Or if your bride-to-be is a fan of the film Mamma Mia! she might like to recreate the romance of the movie with help from the Ionian Weddings travel agency, which has a special MM! package for about £2,800.
- As of yet we can’t find a company that will hire monkeys out (say if you wanted a page boy with a difference) but The Animal Company hire out animals for films so it might be a good place to start.
Been to any weird and wonderful venues lately? Perhaps you witnessed a deep sea wedding, or tied the knot while walking down the wings of a plane. Let us know…
