Fitness: Kettlebells Before Wedding Bells

Kettlebells are great for burning fat, building cardio fitness levels and gaining all over body strength from short, intense workouts. Martial art fighters and military strong men have been using the Russian cast iron weights (that basically look like a cannon ball with a handle) for centuries.

We pinned down one of the UK’s leading kettlebell experts and personal trainers, Stephen Aish to find out why they are popular today with footballers, athletes and anyone wanting to get fit fast.

DSC_0135How effective are they?

Kettlebells can burn 1500 calories an hour and can lose weight with as little as 20 minutes, three times per week. They are used by a majority of personal trainers for weight loss as well as professional athletes. The effectiveness of kettlebells lies in compound and functional exercises that mirror real world mechanics and use the body as an integrated unit for maximum efficiency and safety.

Do you have to be mega fit to start on them?

The great thing about kettlebells is that they are joint friendly for people carrying a tad of excess baggage. Rather than traditional cardio which can impact the knees and ankles and lead to further problems, kettlebell training is performed on the spot and actually strengthens the joints while cutting fat and increasing cardio capacity.

What’s it going to cost?

For weight loss, guys can kick off with a 12kg for £39.95 and this is a lifelong investment. For kettlebell virgins, a fast track masterclass of 4 hours can be grabbed for £97 and this is designed to enable you to fly solo with confidence.

How long before I start to see results?

Within two weeks my clients have felt stronger, fitter and noticed increased energy levels. A loss of 2-3kg a month is very easy with just a couple of intense sessions a week.

Just one exercise – the two hand swing – works 80% of the muscles in the body, multiple joints (meaning less injury risk from isolation exercises) and can deliver a full body strength, core and cardio workout quicker than most people can get to their gym and find a machine that’s free.
