Blog – Hemingway’s Suit In A Box
Traditionally, grooms get a bit of a raw deal at weddings. I’ve said in a previous blog post that brides have the run of the store on the big day and I’m not denying that should be the case – but look at the other people who benefit. The bridesmaids, groomsmen, the mother-in-laws; they all get a nice ‘thank you’ gift for doing their part. The nicest gift the groom gets is the suit which all too often has to be given back if it’s a hired one.
This is why I’m glad to see Hemingway’s Suit in a Box is proving popular as a present for the groom. We launched Suit in a Box earlier this year as a means for loved ones to be able to purchase a hand-made bespoke suit as a gift, without having to go and take measurements from the recipient in advance – which often gives the game away. They don’t just get the cloth and lining, of course. The price also includes a full fitting service and personal delivery.
We always thought Suit in a Box would do well for Christmas and birthdays, but it’s been nice to see father-in-laws putting their hand in their pocket and buying them for their son-in-laws – some even opting to add a personal message in the lining. Thankfully they have all been positive and quite touching messages; with, as yet, none opting for: ‘Keep your hands off my daughter’.
I’m confident this trend will continue as weddings get more Americanised, something I’m not usually fond of. One odd idea that I can’t see making much of an impact in the UK is giving the groom his own cake [AHEM!, Ed.], or to be more precise an Armadillo cake. I understand this tradition started in the Southern States of America but thanks to a scene in the film Steel Magnolias it has become a bit of an odd American custom. I’m sure if you asked most grooms whether they would like a hand-made bespoke suit or a cake shaped like an Armadillo they would opt for the former.
Suit in a Box is available from £1,995 at www.hemingwaytailors.co.uk or by calling 0800 5423406.
