Let me entertain you… Picking a band!
One of our biggest concerns about our wedding is that all our guests will have a good time and this essentially comes down to what entertainment you hire.
Once we began looking into this area of wedding planning, we didn’t realise how many options there are to keep family and friends amused. You can hire magicians, singing waiters and cancan girls if you want. Or, perhaps you want a harpist, saxophonist or pianist for the drinks reception.
We hadn’t really thought about any of this. While it’d be lovely to have some music playing as our guests chit chat among themselves after our ceremony, our main focus was to locate some entertainment for the evening portion of our wedding.
I’d often find a band that looked good on paper and then we’d press the ‘Listen Here’ button. And we’d have to quickly – and desperately – try to turn the mute function on.
Trying to discover one that played every single song we wanted was near on impossible, so, to be honest, we gave up with this.
And of course, after months (literally) of looking, I started to think that while I love the likes of Ben E King, Roy Orbison and The Temptations… others might not feel so strongly. So, we could end up with the bride boogying on the dance floor all night (sounds good), and everyone else sitting down twiddling their thumbs (sounds bad). Especially when they’ll probably all be muttering ‘What is this song?’ making me feel suitably old…
Instead, I tried to find a group that would be able to do a little of what we like, a little of what the young ‘uns would like and, of course, something for the oldies. Whether we like all the songs or not, I think that a wedding is best when everyone can get involved. And it really was important that all our guests have a great time at ours.
We investigated the website a little further and were pleasantly surprised to find so much information, so many guidelines, a portfolio and a playlist that we could read about. And, best of all, when we press ‘Listen here’ we loved what we heard.
It was something different. As Simon Cowell would say, ‘You’re not just a karaoke singer’. Indeed, the Greg Bish Function Band definitely didn’t sound like they sang at karaokes, on cruises or, even (dare I say it) at weddings!
They have a unique sound, authentic talent and individual style.
So, we made a decision and snapped them up for our wedding date (we were definitely beginning to realise that we weren’t the only people getting married that day and things were getting booked quickly).
We have already received a comprehensive form asking us for our music preferences (note there’ll be no hip hop or urban rock – sorry!) And a separate list for the DJ set we’re having in between, so we can specify the DJ will play all the songs that we definitely want to hear at the wedding but isn’t on the band’s repertoire.
This level of organisation is just what a frazzled bride to be needs – and especially one like me!!
The next (and first) time we’ll see the Greg Bish Function Band will be on our wedding day and I hope you’ll agree with me that they are certain to have The X Factor!
(Even Simon would agree!)
